Tributes have been paid to Elite Island Resorts founder Sir Robert Barrett, who died aged 84 on Thursday (March 6).
Barrett’s hospitality career spanned more than six decades, having begun when he moved to the Caribbean in the early 1960s.
He moved to Antigua in the mid-1980s and fell in love with the island, going on to purchase and build many all-inclusive resorts and related businesses.
A well-known figure in the Caribbean tourism industry, he also owned and operated resorts in Barbados, the Grenadines, St. Lucia and Tortola.
Barrett was knighted in Antigua in 2023 and awarded the title of Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of the Nation (KCN).
This honour was awarded in recognition of his significant lifetime contributions to Antigua and Barbuda tourism.
Colin Pegler, chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation for the UK and Europe, described Barrett as “the most incredible mentor and partner”.
He added: “He was a true legend. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his cherished family, many friends and his team too.
“I am immensely proud to have known Sir Rob.”
Craig Marshall, chairman of The Antigua & Barbuda Hotels and Tourism Association (ABHTA), said: “Sir Robert Barrett’s impact on the hospitality landscape in Antigua and Barbuda cannot be overstated.
“His presence was larger than life, not just in his business acumen but in his generous spirit, always eager to share his expert knowledge of the industry. His guidance was instrumental in shaping the ABHTA into what it is today. He was not only a leader in the industry but a mentor to many, constantly pushing the boundaries for the betterment of the hospitality sector.
“As an organisation, we recognise that his passing leaves an enormous void. However, his legacy is one that will live on in the countless professionals whose careers he helped to shape, in the businesses he nurtured, and in the generosity he extended to his community. Sir Barrett’s vision for a thriving tourism industry has left us a solid foundation upon which we must continue to build.”
The statement added: “Sir Robert Barrett has left a legacy that will continue to inspire us all.”
A private family gathering will be held in Barrett’s honour, before a celebration-of-life event for close friends and colleagues in Antigua later this year.
All hotels and businesses established by Barrett will continue to operate as normal.
